Understanding the “upgrades” to the Nintendo Switch 2?

Before we dive into the titles, it is important to understand what exactly represents an “upgrade” in the context of Switch 2. There are three main types:

  • Technical update via patch: The developer releases a free update that unlocks better graphics, 4K resolution (in dock mode), more stable frame rate, ray tracing or other improvements taking advantage of the new hardware.
  • Definitive version (repurchase): A new edition of the game is released, usually with all DLCs included, graphic improvements and sometimes even new modes or content.
  • Use of retrocompatibility with automatic gains: The game is not changed directly, but it already runs better on Switch 2 because of the hardware, with faster loadings and more stable performance.

How to know if a game has upgrade for Nintendo Switch 2?

Keep an eye on the versions identified as “Edition for Nintendo Switch 2” and on Nintendo’s own lists with the titles that will receive improvements. Also, if the console is online, it automatically detects if there is an update available when opening the game, including those directed to enjoy the new hardware.

Nintendo Switch 2 came with a clear proposal: raise the experience of the games that the public already loves. By offering upgrades to large titles of the previous generation, Nintendo creates a soft, valuable transition without abandoning those who have already invested in the previous console ecosystem.

Whether it’s free patch, paid reissue or automatic improvements via backwardness, upgrades are there to show that there is still a lot to enjoy in the original switch library, now with new generation face (and performance).
