Understand why Danish police started playing video games

The title is not wrong. The initiative began approximately two years ago, as a way to increase confidence in the corporation. In addition, the so -called virtual patrol department can act in a very sensitive area today: online crimes that reach many children and adolescents.

Police officers make live broadcasts on the Twitch platform of Counter-strike, Minecraft or Robloxdepending on the age group they seek to reach. During the lives, they play and talk to young people. They also talk about identifying suspicious behaviors on the network and how to report.

In an interview with Folha de S.Paulo newspaperthe superintendent of this Danish Department, Sisse Birkebæk, talked about the initial challenge of putting the idea into practice:

“They used to ask, ‘is that really what the money from my taxes is being allocated to? Play online and record tiktoks? ‘”Said the agent.

Today, however, society already accepts the work of these police officers and understands the importance of acting in this online environment, and approaching the new generations.

Successful initiative

  • Today, the corporation receives more than 50 daily messages in social networking applications and the police server on Discord.
  • Most contacts start from children and adolescents, which indicates an approximation of young people with the police.
  • The department head celebrated these numbers:

“We need to be where young people are. In addition to making the internet a safer place, children have a connection with the police and can see their face behind the uniforms, ”he explained.

  • Faced with success, other countries have already sought Denmark police to learn more about the project.
  • The Virtual Patrol Department has 10 agents trained to deal with young people.
  • The idea is that the police can avoid crimes that, unfortunately, have become commonplace on the internet, as someone asking for photos of minors.
  • From the complaints received, the corporation begins an investigation, building a case if necessary.
  • In addition to the game lives, the department also promotes online parenting meetings and questions and answers sessions of specific topics such as cyberbullying and online harassment.

Games and Violence

The topic is the most controversial and aroused discussions for over three decades. During this time you can find studies that relate electronic games to aggressiveness in children. At the same time other research says this has nothing to do.

I particularly see no problem. Also because I play since I was born practically and I don’t like to kill an ant (I only kill the mosquitoes because I am indeed allergic).

And this news about the Danish police playing with young people just reinforces my impression. What makes something good or bad are people. That the authorities increasingly use technology as an ally.
