Who is a subscriber of PS Plus knows that one of the most important moments of the month is the announcement of the free games you can redeem in the period. Yes, you need the service to play online, but having access to a catalog helps a lot to improve the experience.
I am one of those subscribers and I really enjoyed the reformulation made by Sony. To the point of exchanging my basic package (Essential) for the intermediate (extra) – precisely to be able to download games of a larger collection.

In recent months, however, I felt a drop in the quality of available games. Some of them were very cool, but unique to PlayStation 5. And what was a distrust now has become a certainty.
Sony announced on Wednesday (29) that, from January 2026, will only include “occasionally” PS4 games on PlayStation Plus.
According to the company, subscribers will still have access to any of the previously rescued PS4 games. In Sony’s own words, the focus from now on should be “practically all for the PS5”.
The end of an era on PS4?
- The PS4 arrived in 2013 and is one of the most successful consoles in history.
- I understand that cycles come to an end, but the news is nonetheless traumatic for the owners.
- And it’s a lot of people, see? Millions of people around the world still play in it – and I’m among them.
- Sony itself reported mid -last year that half of users had not yet migrated to the later generation.
- Of course, the studios that develop games should stop making PS4 versions over time.
- Now, I see this PS Plus announcement as a little push so that the audience transitions at once.
- The problem is that many people have not yet changed the console for financial reasons.
- Here in Brazil, for example, a PlayStation 5 does not come out for less than $ 3,000.
- And you still have the spending on PS Plus and the games themselves are increasingly expensive.
Natural way
Sony explained that the decision follows the players’ migration to the PlayStation 5, which became the company’s main focus.
You can claim that the official text has the word “occasionally.” In practice, however, the tendency is that the company only makes games available from the new platform.
Now, despite having a heart pain, it must be admitted that the transition between generations is a natural process in industry.
At the end of 2022, for example, Microsoft also ended the distribution of Xbox 360 games to subscribers of the Xbox Live Gold program. The same thing happened to Nintendo Wii and will happen to the current generation in about 5 years.

It is the natural order of the market – and the consumer who unfolds to accompany this rhythm. Unfortunately…
