Ia Generative can change the future of games

Those who play RPG know the importance of dialogues with the NPCs, acronym for Non-Playable Character (or non-playable character, in literal translation). Many developers even put curiosities of the story in these trivial conversations.

Nevertheless, there are a lot of player who ignores NPCs without the smallest ceremony. And they jump precisely because of knowing that there will not be much out there. The format created for this genre is like this ever: you go to the NPC, click on it and the conversations will be the same. The NPC is almost always more part of the scenery than a character in itself.

If you are someone who has tired of this formula, know that things can change figure with the advancement of technology. Imagine inserting an artificial intelligence into each of these dolls. Instead of limited and pre-programmed conversation, you would have a real interaction with them. You might ask about this character’s life, and every answer would generate a different reaction from the NPC.

Cool, right? It would be to bring entertainment to another level, right? Well, believe me, there is already a company taking the first steps in this direction.

A pioneer experience

Nvidia is showing how developers can start using their AI tools to give voice, cheer up and generate dialogues for video games.

The company launched on Monday (25), during its participation in the game developers conference, a clip of Covert Protocol. It is the demonstration of a kind of game that shows how Generative AI tools can allow NPCs to respond uniquely to players’ interactions, generating new answers that adapt to live gameplay.

In the demo, players take on the role of a private detective, completing goals based on AI technology NPC conversations. Nvidia states that each game is “unique”, with the interactions of players in real time leading to different finals.

THE Covert Protocol It was built in collaboration with Inworld AI, an AI gaming startup, and uses Nvidia’s Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE) technology.

It is true that this clip showed little and the journalists who followed the event said the demo was just a succession of NPC clips firing different dialogues without the feeling of a real conversation.

Regardless of this, I find it valid for a first step. And I repeat: I, as a fan of RPGs, are looking forward to the next steps.

Inworld has announced that it is planning to launch the source code of the Covert Protocol “In the near future” to encourage other developers to adopt Nvidia’s ACE Digital Human Technology.

Inworld has also announced a partnership with Microsoft in November 2023 to help develop Xbox tools to create characters, stories and AI technology missions.

Another type of technology

  • Also on Monday, Nvidia presented another technology at the event.
  • Called audio2face, she can synchronize characters’ lips to speech in different languages.
  • The demonstration was made in a clip of the next MMO World of Jade Dynasty.

  • The idea is that audio2face facilitates the creation of games in multiple languages, without manual resuscitation of characters.
  • Although interesting, technology can generate revolt of professional voice actors.
  • Let’s wait for the next chapters.
