Procedure performed in Hong Kong received remote commands from a surgeon located in Zurich

All about China
A team of doctors used a PlayStation Move control to remotely perform an endoscopy on a living pig 9,300 km away. The procedure – which also involved a stomach wall biopsy – involved two operators: a clinical doctor in the Hong Kong operating room in China and a remote specialist in Zurich, Switzerland.
Understand:
- A remote endoscopy was performed on a living pig 9,300 km away with a PlayStation control;
- The procedure took place in China, and was operated by a surgeon located in Switzerland;
- The probe and robotic system were connected in real time to a control center thousands of kilometers away, allowing the surgeon to act remotely using a video game control;
- The team is now preparing to bring technology to the human testing phase.

The endoscopic probe and the robotic system, both located in Hong Kong, were connected by a Websocket protocol that transferred real -time data to a Zurich Control Center, allowing the Swiss doctor to send instructions to the robotic agent during the procedure using a video game control.

In the procedure in question, the surgeon of Zurich used a PlayStation Move control to perform endoscopy, but other demonstrations released by the team also show PlayStation 5 controls.

The research was published in Advanced Intelligent Systems. A video of the endoscopy has also been released and can be seen below:
In communicationthe team celebrated the success of the experiment, showing optimism for human testing. “In the next stage of our research, we will conduct endoscopy in a human stomach. In addition to endoscopic procedures, such as cancer screening, there is much potential for this technology. This includes its application in other areas of the gastrointestinal tract, the neurovascular system and fetal surgery, ”says Bradley Nelson of the Zurich Federal Institute of Technology.
